Quick honesty first: the Coleman stove I used on camera malfunctioned on me, so I’m not going to tell you to buy it. Instead I picked three stoves from other brands with strong reputations for lasting. I haven’t cooked on these on camera yet. These picks are based on their track record and independent reviews.
1. Camp Chef Everest 2X: if you actually cook at camp
Two 20,000 BTU burners heat big pans fast, push-button ignition means no hunting for a lighter, and clip-on wind shields keep the flame steady. It also turns down low enough to scramble eggs without burning them.
- Pros: among the most powerful in its class, simmers well, push-button start, strong wind shields, sturdy metal frame
- Cons: bulky and heavy, uses more propane at full power, latches can loosen over time, regulator can be fiddly
- See it in my Shop
2. Eureka Ignite Plus: the one that keeps going year after year
Built tough, with burners about 12 inches apart, so two full-size pans fit side by side.
- Pros: durable, wide cooking surface, easy to use, great for car camping
- Cons: less heat than the Camp Chef stoves, not light (car, not backpack)
- See it in my Shop
3. Camp Chef Explorer: the beast for crowds and tailgates
Two cast-aluminum burners at 30,000 BTU each (60,000 total), and it works with Camp Chef’s 14-inch griddles and grill boxes.
- Pros: most powerful of the three, built for years of hard use, takes 14″ accessories, handles wind and big pots
- Cons: biggest and heaviest, burns propane fast at full power, more stove than two people need
- See it in my Shop
My quick pick
- Cooking real meals for 2 to 4: Everest 2X
- Want it to last and need room for two big pans: Ignite Plus
- Feeding a crowd or tailgating: Explorer
All three are in the Shop under Outdoor & Travel.
